Get Away From Me!

When it comes to school it is almost nearly impossible for people to wake up and be stress free. People are constantly trying to push themselves and try to be better than they were the day before. Have you ever woken up with a space free mind not worrying about a thing? If you are one of those few people I envy you. Day to day people are worrying about what they did wrong, what they can do better, who they want to impress, and how to handle their money. On top of of this worrying school adds to it. Whether it is four essays due by the end of the week with one math quiz and reading. Financial aid not covering enough loans, or keeping your GPA up while trying to stay awake in class. School isn’t something that you can just run away from. I mean you can but it is very unlikely to become successful without degrees and schooling in today’s world.

In the article Stress In College Students by Alan Riefman it talks about how stress is a deeper issue at Columbia University which makes it interesting to think about because wouldn’t you think at an ivy league school it is easy for them? That their smart enough to deal with everything and not worry? It is actually proven to be the complete opposite. Just because they’re smart doesn’t mean it comes easy for them. Maybe in the aspect of subjects but they are put on high expectations that they are supposed to achieve even better than they ever have before and this could make things become difficult. At University of Pennsylvania a 19 year old freshman runner Madison Holleran was stressed about her 3.5 GPA and unsatisfied with her grades that she committed suicide a week later. It is sad to see how one little number and  high judgmental expectations could ruin the lives of so many people.

Not only is it just grades that college students become stressed about but also their identity and who they are surrounded by. When coming to college you realize how different people are compared to who you have been surrounded with throughout high school. You grow up with the people you know and the people who are familiar don’t phase you because your used to them being different. College is different there’s more of a variety of people at a college. Yes, everyone finds their friends but in reality everyone is an outcast to each other. Many people have different views and ways to present themselves and not everyone can accept it. According to the article in US news a young college boy had killed himself after his roommate finds out he is gay and sends a viral video to the internet.

In today’s world we allow way to many people to influence us and force us to believe everyone’s opinions about ourselves. We are constantly changing to try and be better not for ourselves but for everyone else. This shouldn’t be the case, we should not let other people take our lives for us. School alone is enough stress for us to deal with trying to please everyone. While keeping track of peoples opinions and trying to handle school at the same time is definitely not something people want to deal with everyday. Unfortunately we cant get away from that. So what should we do? It can not be so simple as ignore it. Too many lives are getting ruined due to stress and something needs to be done.
